The Principal Investigator is committed to all team members' personal and scientific growth to help with their career development.
I supervised Andrea Tapia González during 3 years (2015-2017) and taught her genetics and Drosophila handling while I was a graduate student. During these years, she presented her master thesis (2016) using metabolomics to investigate the relationship between mitochondrial fusion and aging. These studies ended up in her first-author publication. After I left the lab, she decided to stay as a graduate student and defended her doctoral thesis in 2022.
"My experience with Victor as a supervisor was highly advisable. He is professional, kind, and helpful. He also creates a nice environment where you will grow in a professional and personal way"

I co-tutor Pilar Puig Serra's bachelor's thesis degree (2017) while I was a graduate student, where she validated a GDAP1 KO model in Drosophila to study Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. She presented her work in 2017 and moved to the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) in Madrid to start her Ph.D.
"Victor simply knows how to be a good mentor: clear objectives, set deadlines, and always willing to help in a friendly manner. All of this together brings out the best of you professionally. After 5 years, he is still my mentor"

I supervised Emily Okamoto while I was a postdoc at the UCSD for developing her master thesis entitled "Evaluation of factors affecting the performance of the gRNA component of a gene drive construct". She presented her work in 2021.
"I am sincerely so grateful for all of the mentoring and support Victor provided throughout my years at UCSD. He created a comfortable environment where we were able to freely communicate, having meaningful conversations about science and other topics. I was able to most definitely grow professionally and personally under his guidance"
